Coronavirus (COVID-19) Response

Nourishing Hope is supporting our neighbors and their families during the COVID-19 emergency response.

Nourishing Hope immediately modified its food distribution model in March while still getting food to those who need it most. Just weeks into the outbreak, we saw a 400% increase in demand for our services.

Our priority is the safety and health of our clients, volunteers and staff. We’re taking extra precautions as we continue to provide essential services to our community.

News & Updates

On behalf of our entire team, we wish you safety, health and peace during this trying time. During the COVID-19 crisis, we’ve continually shared updates and important news we have to share on our blog.

40% of Chicagoans live in economic hardship.

That means the loss of just one paycheck or even one shift at work can cause a dramatic decrease in financial stability. Schools and businesses are closing throughout Chicago, and we are working tirelessly to distribute food safely to ensure those in need remain healthy and fed. We will be here to help those affected by this crisis, but we need your help! Please support our programs and our community with a gift today if you are able. $1 can provide 8 meals!

For clients: Food

Nourishing Hope is distributing pre-packaged bags of groceries at our Sheridan Market and at La Casa Norte’s Fresh Market. Please see below for details on our new distribution procedures at these sites:

  • You will be greeted by a staff member or volunteer outside who will fill out some key information on a tablet, including name, date of birth, monthly/weekly pickup preference, and whether you are a new client. We are asking all clients to wait outside for their groceries.
  • Please wait in line as your information is processed, and when it’s your turn, you will be brought a standard supply of nutritious groceries. There will be no personal shopping during the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • We understand you may receive some food items you’re not fond of. You may give your unwanted items to a neighbor in need, or let the staff member or volunteer know you don’t want something and they can return it. PLEASE DO NOT discard these items outside the building.

We understand that this model does not allow for choice of products, but to reduce the chances of virus transmission, we need to provide service as quickly and safely as possible. Please know that you will receive a variety of healthy foods from each of the main categories including: dairy, meats, dry goods, and produce.

If choice of food product is still very important to you, we urge you to sign up for our Online Market which allows you to select and order your groceries from a mobile device or computer. If you have any questions, please email onlinemarket@lakeviewpantry.org or call (773) 302-0125.

Winter Weather Protocols

To keep everyone safe, we are preparing to continue serving clients pre-packaged groceries outside for distribution during the winter months. To do this safely, especially in the colder temperatures, we need to serve clients as quickly as possible to limit how long they have to wait outside. You can help!

  • Visit us on days with better weather, if at all possible

  • Take your entire allotment of food

  • If you know someone is a new client, ask them to pre-register on our website at lakeviewpantry.org/register

For clients: Social Services

Nourishing Hope’s Social Services team is offering case management and mental wellness sessions by phone call, video call, or email. Please reach out to our team by:

Leave a message with your name, contact information, and service request and we will get in touch as soon as we can — we are here to help!

For volunteers and staff:

For the safety of all, volunteer orientation sessions are being held virtually. More details on volunteering can be found at lakeviewpantry.org/volunteer. We are asking that all staff and volunteers do the following to help prevent the spread of disease:

  • Wear a mask. We mandate the use of cloth or other non-surgical masks at all Nourishing Hope sites in accordance with CDC recommendations. Please plan to wear your own mask. (If you do not have a mask, we will provide you with one.) Please review this link for instructions on how to wear masks properly.
  • Practice good hand hygiene. Wash your hands frequently with soap and water and/or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. We are keeping hand sanitizer in all public places at all Nourishing Hope locations.
  • You may wear the gloves we provide when handling food or serving clients. If you use gloves, please discard them after your shift. Do not save them.
  • Reduce touching your nose, eyes, and mouth. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, then go wash your hands or use hand sanitizer.
  • Stay home if you are sick. If you have a fever, stay home until you are fever-free without fever-reducing medication for 24 hours.
  • At Nourishing Hope we already wipe down and clean public spaces after each distribution. We are adding a few new tasks to the post-distribution cleaning procedures, including wiping down frequently touched items like doorknobs, handrails, toilet handles, elevator buttons and rails, etc.
  • Know the facts, don’t panic, and don’t spread rumors.

Meeting Increased Need

Nourishing Hope temporarily operated a food distribution and packing site out of Wrigley Field this spring, which accommodated more clients while allowing our staff and volunteers the space to safely distance from each other. We also partnered with local restaurants to address hunger and restaurant layoffs, delivering chef-prepared boxed meals to low-income residents and seniors.

Plus, once baseball was back, we transitioned our Wrigley packing operations to a new temporary site in Avondale, located near the corner of Roscoe and California, where there is plenty of space there for us to continue our food packing operations. Shifts at Wrigley were consistently full, and that is a great testament to the energy and commitment of our volunteer corps. Our volunteers have brought the same can-do attitude to our new location in Avondale as we continue stepping up operations to meet the need in our city.

Nourishing Hope Exists Because of the Support of Our Neighbors.

With multiple food distribution programs that deliver more than 2.8 million pounds of food to our neighbors each year and social services that help clients achieve independence, Nourishing Hope aims to end hunger for good. Make your impact today!
